Feedback provided to
tutee: Mao Mao feels that listening is one of the more difficult skills for him
to practice. The most challenging aspect for him is staying focused during the
entire passage. During our session we practiced taking notes as a strategy for
staying focused. The combination of the physical act of taking notes and the
need to listen closely to produce notes helped him to stay focused for the
entire passage.
Lesson(s) about tutoring
and/or the tutee you learned: I practiced building schema before having Mao Mao
listen to the recorded passage. I had to opportunity to see first-hand how
powerful schema building can be. We discussed modern art and its popularity in
China. Starting with the discussion piqued Mao Mao’s interest in the recording,
helping him to stay focused while listening.
