Darliin Khahaifa TS#14

Date/Time: 4/16/18 3:00 P.M.- 4:00 P.M.
Location: CIES
Topic/Skill: Mao Mao and I reviewed the grammar topic of present and past verb tenses. We also practiced listening skills.
Feedback provided to tutee: Mao Mao at times gets confused when forming the past progressive and past perfect tense. He did not struggle to form the present progressive and present perfect, which allowed me to show him the pattern in forming all the verb tenses. Once he was able to see that the present perfect and past perfect follow almost the same format, he had fewer problems. We also worked on listening practice. We spent quite a bit of time reviewing how to stay focused when listening. Mao Mao tends to struggle when it comes to paying attention during listening activities. We practiced note taking and outlining to help him stay present during listening activities.
Lessons about tutoring and/or tutee you learned: Mao Mao wanted to focus our sessions more on preparing him for the IELTS test. I found that although tutoring with materials that are interesting to the tutee is very important, for Mao Mao’s purposes it helped to work with a variety of materials, both familiar to him and not familiar. I think it is important for him to learn how to focus on the material even if it is not of interest to him, particularly because he will not have any choice in what materials are presented to him during the official test.
