Darliin Khahaifa TS#10

Date/Time: April 6, 2018 2:00 P.M.- 3:00 P.M.
Location: CIES
Topic/Skill: IELTS writing practice
Feedback provided to tutee: Mao Mao has a strong aversion to pre-writing planning. I spent the tutoring session trying to show him the importance of planning. I presented him with a practice IELTS test writing prompt. First, I had him write a shortened version of his essay without planning, giving him ten minutes to complete it. We then made a plan for the essay, and he used that to write a second version. We compared both of his essays, allowing Mao Mao to see the difference that planning can make, particularly when writing an essay under a time constraint.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Discussing planning with Mao Mao gave me insight into why he doesn’t like to plan before he begins writing. He feels that it takes too much time away from his essay writing time. This discussion allowed me to tailor my lesson to his needs and show him ways to plan that are not time intensive while being effective.
