Topic/Skill: Mao Mao and
I continued listening comprehension practice to prepare for the IELST test.
Feedback provided to
tutee: Mao Mao needed to pay attention to synonyms and different phrasing of
the practice materials. Many comprehension questions on the IELTS test do not
use the same sentences and phrasing as the listening selection. I drew Mao Mao’s
attention to this to help him answer the questions more effectively. Listening for
the overall idea of the listening sample rather than listening for specific
strings of words seems to be the most effective strategy for answering the IELTS
listening comprehension questions.
Lessons about tutoring
and/or tutee you learned: I learned that a test prep lesson can still be used
to teach communicative skills. Although Mao Mao and I were practicing
strategies for being able to most effectively answer test questions, we also
had the opportunity to talk about synonyms and practice creating alternative phrasing
for sentences.
