Darliin Khahaifa TS#16

Date/Time: 4/19/18 12:00 P.M.- 1:00 P.M.
Location: CIES
Topic/Skill: Mao Mao and I practiced his speaking skills, simulating the speaking portion of the IELTS test.
Feedback provided to tutee: Mao Mao has a very large productive vocabulary and an understanding of many grammar structures. Despite this, he is not confident in his speaking abilities, which causes his speaking to be very halted and unnatural. I tried to help him work on his confidence when speaking, pointing out to him how much he has already mastered when producing sentences in English. I also made sure to review the planning process before speaking. He will be give a minute of planning time when taking the test. I showed him how to organize his ideas and create a framework to follow. This will help him to be more comfortable and confident.
Lessons about tutoring and/or tutee you learned: It seems that the biggest obstacle for Mao Mao to overcome is his lack of confidence. Focusing on this caused me to become more aware of how important it is to reduce the affective filter when teaching English. When Mao Mao is comfortable, his confidence increases, and his English improves dramatically.
